A February 6 report on CNN described conditions in Assam for female laborers that are not in compliance with local or international laws and standards. According to the report, women work 10 to 16 hours per day for less than USD 3.00 and often work while pregnant. Women are expected to pick up to 24 kilograms of tea, or have their wages cut. Many of the women do not get enough food or medical support while working on the plantations. The state of Assam also has the highest maternal mortality rate of any state in India, according to the National Institution for Transforming India, and the conditions on agricultural plantations play a role.
