CMS Creates POS Code for Street Medicine for Use With Non-Medicare Claims

CMS has created a place of service (POS) code (27) for services provided to unsheltered homeless people, according to Medicare Transmittal 12,202.[1] Medicare won’t process claims with POS 27, but more instructions are coming.

The new POS code is “Outreach Site/Street: A non-permanent location on the street or found environment, not described by any other POS code, where health professionals provide preventive, screening, diagnostic, and/or treatment services to unsheltered homeless individuals.”
