Agencies Seek Revisions to Oversight of DURC, Recombinant DNA Studies

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) is soliciting thoughts on revisions to federal and institutional oversight of dual use research of concern (DURC) and related research involving toxins and pathogens.

Meanwhile, NIH’s Office of Science Policy (OSP) is seeking feedback on possible changes to guidelines governing research involving synthetic or recombinant nucleic acid molecules.

OSTP and OSP each recently issued requests for information (RFIs) to help craft their policies, with deadlines this month. Although the agency names sound similar, their proposals differ. Institutions may want to look closely at both and consider submitting comments to weigh in on what could become future requirements they and their investigators will have to follow.
