Understanding Social Determinants of Health Data and Z Codes

CMS on Sept. 6 posted this graphic explaining Z codes and the purpose of collecting them. For example, Medicare for the first time will pay for homelessness under the 2024 final inpatient prospective payment system regulation published in the Aug. 28 Federal Register.[1] It reinforces the Biden administration’s determination to embed health equity in its payment and policy decisions.
