John Falcetano (john.falcetano@brooksrehab.org) is Director Corporate Compliance at Brooks Health System in Jacksonville, Florida.

Author’s note: A critical element of any effective compliance program is monitoring. As a service to our members, each month this column focuses on potential monitors for specific business lines.

In this month’s column, we will discuss another tool that is very useful as it relates to potential monitors—using Program for Evaluating Payment Patterns Electronic Report (PEPPER) results to identify potential areas to monitor. PEPPER can guide healthcare entities’ monitoring activities. PEPPER supports auditing and monitoring compliance efforts with a goal of complying with Medicare regulations and preventing improper Medicare payments.
