Patient Privacy Court Case: November 2023

On Sept. 5, the Superior Court of the State of California in the County of Los Angeles granted final approval of a settlement agreement[1] of an undisclosed amount for a class-action lawsuit against Good Samaritan Hospital—a healthcare facility serving Los Angeles County—related to a 2020 data breach.[2] Good Samaritan’s business practices also involve collecting and storing confidential patient and medical information for patients.[3] While the breach affected approximately 233,800 patients,[4] 134,000 patients were notified as class members and received a Notice of Data Security Incident letter stating that an unknown, unauthorized third party may have accessed their information as a result of a data security incident.[5]
