The World Series and Compliance

With apologies to Adam Turteltaub, I must once again report that the Houston Astros won the 2017 World Series. As momentous as this was for the city of Houston, it turns out that baseball has multiple lessons for the compliance professional, life, and just about everything else.

The Astros used a mix of advanced sabermetrics to help assess players and then place them in the best position to not only help the team but also to reach their athletic potential. As with most compliance officers, it was a mix of data and (compliance) smarts. They did this coming back from three horrendous seasons of 100+ losses from 2011 to 2013. Now they are world champions for the first team in the franchise’s 55-year history.
