UK Environmental Bill closer to being passed

The United Kingdom’s overhauled environmental legislation is a step closer to becoming law.[1] The Environment Bill was introduced in January 2020 to replace existing European Union policy frameworks after Brexit. The UK bill takes into account goals set out in the government’s 25 Year Environment Plan and creates a new enforcement body, the Office for Environmental Protection.[2]

The bill rests on long-term targets informed by the current environmental improvement plan (the 25-year plan) and a statement of environmental principles to be drafted by the secretary of state. These long-term goals affect four major policy areas: air and water quality, biodiversity, resource efficiency, and waste reduction. The goals outlined[3] in the 25-year plan will inform the long-term standards legally mandated by this pending legislation.
