A promise is a promise

Twenty years ago, in the middle of the night, our family was driving west through Nebraska when an apple-sized rock, thrown from the overpass above us, pierced our windshield with an explosive crash. The windshield was heavily cracked.

The local truck stop had nobody available to fix the windshield for the next three days “on account of it being the 4th of July weekend and all.” They advised duct tape. We taped the windshield together and kept going to the Grand Tetons.
