Patient Privacy Court Case: November 2021

On Sept. 15, 2021, the United States District Court for the District of Nebraska granted final approval of Nebraska Medicine’s data breach class action settlement that included cash reimbursements and credit monitoring.[1] Nebraska Medicine is a comprehensive health network with two major hospitals, more than 1,000 doctors and 40 clinics in the Omaha area. Between Aug. 27, 2020, and Sept. 20, 2020, Nebraska Medicine experienced a targeted cybersecurity incident where hackers allegedly had unauthorized access to patient data such as demographics, health and clinical information, and Social Security numbers for approximately 24 days due to inadequate security procedures.
