News Briefs: May 20, 2019

Great River Health System Inc., Great River Foundation, Riverview System Inc., Great River Medical Center, and Great River Physicians and Clinics Inc. in Iowa agreed to pay $3 million to settle a civil monetary penalty case over excessive compensation and hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy, the HHS Office of Inspector General said. The settlement stems from a self-disclosure by Great River, which was accepted into OIG’s Self-Disclosure Protocol in June 2018. According to the settlement, OIG contends Great River paid excessive compensation to a physician, who wasn’t identified, from Jan. 1, 2012, to May 30, 2018. Also, they allegedly “submitted false claims to Medicare, Medicaid and Tricare for medically unnecessary and improperly coded hyperbaric oxygen therapy and wound care services performed” by the same physician. Great River didn’t admit liability in the settlement. Visit http://bit.ly/2lsK5KZ.
