◆ Hospice of Limestone County in Alabama agreed to pay $500,000 in a civil monetary penalty settlement with the HHS Office of Inspector General (OIG). According to the settlement, which was obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, OIG alleged the hospice submitted false claims to Medicare for hospice services between Jan. 1, 2012, and June 30, 2018. The claims allegedly “lacked recertifications of terminal illness, which are required by Medicare in order to bill for hospice services.” The settlement stemmed from Hospice of Limestone County’s self-disclosure to OIG; it was admitted to the Self-Disclosure Protocol.
