Meet Lloyd Dean

This interview with Lloyd Dean was conducted in the last quarter of 2017 by Margaret Hambleton (Margaret.Hambleton@DignityHealth.org), Vice President, Corporate Compliance Officer at Dignity Health in San Francisco, CA. Margaret also serves as President of the SCCE & HCCA Board of Directors.

Lloyd Dean is a Keynote Speaker at the 2018 Compliance Institute, Tuesday, April 17 and will discuss, “Compliance as a Strategic Business Partner: A CEO’s Perspective.”

MH: Thank you so much for taking the time to talk with us today. Can you tell us a bit about Dignity Health?

LD: Dignity Health began as a single hospital, founded on the belief that all people deserve medical care, regardless of their background, ethnicity, or circumstances. Today, it is one of the largest health systems in the nation, a 22-state network that continues this healing ministry every day. Dignity Health reaches beyond hospital walls to keep patients and communities healthy through collaboration and innovation, faith and compassion, advocacy, and action.

MH: We have known each other for a long time now and, for as long as I have known you, you have always been a very strong supporter of compliance programs. When did you realize the importance of compliance?

LD: When I started my career, formal compliance programs didn’t really exist. And I would hear stories about other locations where there would be unwarranted tests or unnecessary prescriptions. It was clear to me that compliance programs needed to be built to curb these behaviors and protect patients. Now, regulations exist to prevent these kinds of abuses. And what I find at Dignity Health is that following these regulations has provided us with better clinical outcomes, because we put patient safety first.
