Highlights From Reproducibility and Replicability in Science

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recently issued a report, Reproducibility and Replicability in Science, which offers a set of recommendations aimed at “improving rigor and transparency in scientific research.” Harvey Fineberg, chair of the committee that wrote the report, told RRC it should be read in the context of other NAS reports, and he offered other insights on how institutions should respond (“NAS Reproducibility Report Offers Definitions, Issues Reminder That ‘All Have a Role to Play,’” RRC 16, no. 6).

One critical aspect of the report, Fineberg said, are definitions.

The terms “reproducibility” and “replicability” are often used interchangeably, but the report uses each term to refer to a separate concept.
