Examples of Physician Data Mining and Benchmarking

Here are graphs showing the results of data mining at University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio, which has 200 physician offices and 24 hospitals. The graphs represent the distribution of physician coding (among the five levels of evaluation and management services) for several physicians at University Hospitals Physician Services (UHPS) and how they compare to their peers and to national CMS data for their specialty, said Cathy Jefferson, senior compliance officer. The data are presented in two different formats for each physician. She said it’s important to look at coding patterns to ensure they’re evenly distributed and not too high or low. Anything that’s anomalous requires a closer look. Contact Jefferson at cathy.jefferson@uhhospitals.org.
