On ethics: Joseph E. Murphy, CCEP

A champion of compliance and ethics in organizations, Joe has worked in the organizational compliance and ethics area for more than 40 years.

AT: As one of the people who has been in compliance and ethics from day one, what elements of the evolution of ethics and compliance programs give you the greatest joy when you see them?

JEM: From the beginning, I have been a champion of the people who do the day-to-day work of compliance and ethics. These are the people in the trenches who fight the daily battles to prevent wrongdoing in companies. Seeing these people empowered, protected, and recognized is a source of deep satisfaction for me. SCCE has been a true leader in this. We have worked to champion the cause of compliance and ethics practitioners. We adopted a professional code for those in our field. We instituted a high-quality certification program that is another source of recognition. We have steadfastly pursued the empowerment and independence of the chief ethics and compliance officer. If the compliance and ethics professionals are abandoned to be the stepchildren of a distracted general counsel, they will remain vulnerable. SCCE has championed a path for success for those in our profession, and while I still see a long distance to go, there is at least a good path forward.
