U.S. President Donald Trump issued two tweets on Sunday, May 5, announcing an increase in the 10% tariff rate on goods worth USD 200 billion that are coming from China, starting Friday, and also wrote that more tariffs worth USD 325 billion are on the way. The tweets coincide with trade talks between China and the U.S. to resolve an ongoing trade conflict that has disrupted global supply chains. Trade talks were set to resume May 7, but were rescheduled for May 9 after reports emerged that Beijing had hardened its position, going back on several previously made commitments. In response, the U.S. filed formal paperwork to move forward with new tariffs starting May 10.
